Revolutionary Hearts

Shore Stories

American Revolution

by Kellee Blake

Ten stories, five couples, and the journey to Independence.

By the time the Declaration of Independence was read in Philadelphia, the people of Virginia’s two remote Eastern Shore counties were moving towards war.

The times were electric, terrifyingly uncertain, and marvelously hopeful. No one could imagine what the next few years would bring.

Share the adventures of five Eastern Shore couples on an extraordinary journey to independence, freedom, and the making of a nation. Some were heroes, some a bit villainous, but all wonderfully human with stories uniquely influenced by the geographic character of the Shore.

From brave young Captain John Cropper and his quickly wed bride, Peggy Petit, whose colorful letters reveal perhaps more than descendants might like, but tell an honest tale of ambition, sacrifice, victory, and genuine love, to the middle aged spinster who married her fifty years older neighbor for his pension, to the enslaved couple who made their way from Virginia all the way to Sierra Leone, Africa, to ultimately become leaders of the community, all of their adventures were bound together by love, tradition, culture, place, and even physical and emotional chains demanding to be broken.
