The Man Who can to Dinner by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman is the definition of Classic American comedy. Opening in 1939 and running for over 700 performances - a good run in those days, "TMWCtD'' was especially popular with its audience for all the thinly veiled familiar cultural icons who were lovingly skewered by the playwrights. Most prominent was the lead character, "Sheridan Whiteside," based on radio personality and bon vivant Alexander Woolcott. Warm and charming on his broadcasts, Woolcott/Whiteside was acid tongued and intolerant in real life. When "Whiteside" slips on the ice outside a home in Mesalia, Ohio, and is forced to convalesce with the family, he wreaks havoc on everyone within range. With visitors from movie stars to convicts to penguins, mayhem and laughs are non-stop!
