Kiss Me Kate (1999 Version)

Paid / Non-Union

Production Description: Egotistical leading man, director, and producer Fred Graham is reunited with his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, when the two are forced to play opposite one another in a new production of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. The battle of the sexes continues onstage and off, as it becomes clear that, as much as this couple profess to hate each other, they are also still in love. Alongside their bickering liaison, the show’s supporting actress, Lois Lane, supports her gambling boyfriend, Bill, as he attempts to evade the the clutches of local gangsters. Throw in a number of cases of mistaken identity, the mob, and comedic routines into the mix and you get Kiss Me, Kate -- a dazzling Broadway classic that earned the very first Tony award for Best Musical.

Fred Graham (Petruchio):

The leading man, 30s - 40s. Writer, producer, director, actor and superman. Worked his way up from the chorus and his ego is as large as his resume is long. Must have a physically imposing presence, excellent facility with Shakespeare’s text, and be extremely handsome, charismatic, and funny. Classic Baritone. Vocal range: Bb - G

Lilli Vanessi (Katharine):

The leading lady, 30s – early 40s. Returning to the stage after a not-so-successful Hollywood turn. A regal diva with a fierce temper and rapier-like wit, but a vulnerability underneath it all. Must have the beauty, poise, and elegance of a 1940s Hollywood movie star. Glorious soprano who also has a rich mezzo/belt. Vocal Range: A – B

Bill Calhoun (Lucentio):

Broadway song and dance man, 20s. His compulsive gambling is always getting him into trouble with Lois Lane, who he loves but can’t trust around other men. Must be a first-rate entertainer with irresistible charm. Excellent actor, singer, and tap dancer. Bari-tenor. Vocal range: G - F

First Man & Second Man :

Character men, 30s - 50s. Two tough gangsters who look completely out of place in this world of bright lights and poetic beauty, but after six years in the prison library, they have developed a unique way with words and a great appreciation for Shakespeare and the theatre. Must have a great sense of classic vaudevillian comedy. Good movers. Vocal range: B - D
